Ins and Outs of Installing A Window Air Conditioner

Summer is here, and New England is hot! Every summer, families rush to install their air conditioning units when the heat picks up. Are you one of them? Well, that’s alright! If it is your first time installing a window air conditioner, your local Ace Hardware in New Hampshire is ready to help. Here are the essential tools and tips to get the job done right the first time.

Tools You’ll Need

First off, you’ll need a window air conditioning unit. Make sure that it will fit the window and space that you wish to install it on. Some units have a minimum or maximum size window that they can fit into. So, before you get started, it’s a good idea to check on that! Now, let’s talk about the tools you’ll most likely need.

  • Power Drill
  • Screwdrivers
  • Level
  • Tape Measure

There are a few things you may need, but it depends on your setup and window space.

  • Extension Cord
  • Foam Insulation Panels

Make sure that you have ample room around your workspace and that there is a plug outlet nearby. If the cord from the air conditioner will not reach the outlet, you’ll need to purchase a suitable extension cord that can support the voltage. Also, if you expect gaps in the window or want to improve insulation, you can buy foam panels to put around the air conditioner.

How To Install

  1. Open the lower window sash where you’ll be installing the air conditioner.
  2. Attach the provided bracket to the window sash
  3. If they are not attached, slide the accordion window panels to the air conditioner.
  4. Lift the air conditioner and place it gently inside the open window. Lifting an air conditioner can be heavy, so enlist help for this step.
  5. Center the air conditioner so it will be stable within the window.
  6. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to use screws to attach the air conditioner firmly.
