Clean Rusty Tools with Items You Have in Your House

Everyone needs a good set of tools. Whether you’re an experienced DIY-er or proud of yourself for successfully changing a light bulb, you should have a set of basic tools to fix little things around your house. Understandably, people get attached to their tools, and you want to hang on to the ones you have for as long as possible. So if your tools get a little rusty, that’s not a reason to get rid of them (although, we do love buying new tools in NH at Aubin Hardware).

You can clean rust off your tools using one of these methods using stuff you probably already have in your house.

Lemon Juice Method

This method is also a fun science experiment. All you need for this method is lemon juice, salt, and a cloth. Start by putting the tool you want to clean on a cloth, dropcloth, or newspaper. Next, cover the tool with salt. This is an essential step in the chemical reaction that is about to occur. Once you’ve covered the tool in salt, squeeze or pour lemon juice over it. Let it sit for two hours to let the acid break down the corrosion. After that time, the chemical reaction of the salt and lemon should have broken the rust down enough to scrub away the rust with a cloth.

Baking Soda Method

This method is similar to the lemon juice method. Again, you won’t need much, just baking soda, water, and a cloth. Combine the water and baking soda to make a paste and spread it on your rusty tools. Let it sit on a cloth or some newspaper for two hours. Then you can wipe away the baking soda paste and scrub the rust off if there is any left behind. Clean your tools with water and let them dry.

White Vinegar Method

White vinegar is many people’s go-to household cleaner, and for good reason. It does everything. Even better, the white vinegar method is the easiest, despite taking the longest. Soak your rusty tools in a bucket with some white vinegar for several hours. The simplest thing to do is leave it overnight. The vinegar will make it easy to scrub the rust away.
