Hosta
Hostas have wide green leaves and pastel flowers that add some colors to the shadier corners of your yard. The flowers can bloom for about a month in the summer, and the leaves last well into the fall. To ensure the flowers come back next year, trim the old stalks after the flowers have finished blooming. Hostas like full or partial shade and thrive in well-drained, acidic soil. They take a little time to establish themselves, reaching maturity in about four years.
Bleeding Heart
Named for its pink, white, or red heart-shaped flowers, the bleeding heart plant is a low-maintenance perennial that adds a whimsical touch to your garden. It flowers in the late spring and lasts well into the summer, typically blooming for six to eight weeks. It likes partial shade and acidic or neutral damp soil. The vine-like stems are pretty delicate, so be sure to plant it in a spot sheltered from the wind.
Hydrangea
The large fluffy cluster blooms of hydrangea plants add color to your yard all summer long. They begin to bloom in early spring and continue to produce new flowers until the early fall. Hydrangeas grow quickly and can become two feet taller every year. They like partial shade and do well in acidic, neutral, or alkaline soil. If you want to keep a little color in your landscaping in the winter, you can leave the dried flowers on the plant. They will still come back next year if you don’t trim them.
