Is Your Basement Too Damp? Here’s How to Find Out

Many of us have been using our basements to escape the heat, but the extra humidity in the summer can cause problems. Often, we don’t know that our basements have moisture problems until it’s too late, and we catch mold or mildew growing in the corners. If you’re unsure if your basement is too damp, there’s an easy test you can do to check. `You don’t need any fancy equipment. You definitely have what you need at home, and if you need anything else, you can pick it up at your local Ace Hardware store.

Does your basement have a moisture problem? Find out with this simple test using basic items you can find at any Ace Hardware store.

DIY Cement Floor Moisture Test

You only need three things to perform this test: scissors, clear plastic sheeting, and duct tape. That’s it. Plastic wrap will work, but it can be hard to get it flat and smooth because it’s designed to stick to itself. We recommended taking a quick trip to your local Ace Hardware to pick up some lightweight plastic sheeting that’s easier to work with.

To set up the test, cut several 24 x 24-inch squares of plastic. You want to set up the test in multiple areas to get a good idea of the moisture level throughout your basement. Lay the squares flat on the floor and secure all the edges to the floor with duct tape. Press down the tape firmly to create a tight seal.

Check the Results

After 48 hours, check the plastic. If there is condensation on the outside, that indicates excess moisture in the air. Peel up the tape to check the underside. Damp or even foggy plastic tells you that your concrete floor is expelling moisture. You can run a dehumidifier for a day or two and then redo the test to see if it makes a significant difference. If the plastic is still damp, you should probably consult with a professional to find out what you can do to combat moisture in your basement.
