Rake the Leaves
This one should come as no surprise. A layer of leaves on top of your grass prevents sunlight from reaching it. Grass growth slows in the fall, but the grass still needs sunlight to photosynthesize and store nutrients in its roots for the winter.
Remove Thatch from the Lawn
Thatch is the collection of roots, leaves, and other plant matter that gets trapped between the turf grass and the soil. If you rake vigorously while clearing the leaves, the thatch will come up with the leaves. Push the tines of your rake firmly while you rake to dislodge the thatch. This will allow your lawn to breathe and better absorb water and nutrients.
Overseed Bare Soil
As you dethatch your lawn, you will likely expose patches of bare soil. To fill in those bare patches in the spring, overseed them now. Fall is a great time to overseed because the cool weather aids in germination.
Keep Watering
Your grass needs to store nutrients for the winter, so it still needs water in the fall. You won’t have to water it as much as you do in the heat of summer, but we can have dry, warm days in the fall, too. Water in the middle of the day when the ground is warmer to increase absorption.
Keep Mowing
Cool-season grasses can grow rapidly in the fall, so don’t put the lawnmower away yet! You won’t have to mow as often as you do in the spring and summer, but keep your lawnmower ready so you can continue to keep your lawn in check.
